The Cause of Anti-Aging

Matrix Metalloproteinases, more commonly referred to as MMPs, are naturally produced enzymes that affect the skin’s ability to repair itself. While MMPs are beneficial to the healing process, excessive MMPs are skin-degrading, and they increase in number as you age and with exposure to environmental stressors. As MMPs increase, collagen and elastin production are compromised, degrading the skin’s ability to regenerate. This causes wrinkles, dull, uneven skin tone and loss of firmness (affecting the tone, texture and volume of skin).

The production of excessive MMPs is stimulated by multiple factors that include the natural aging process, environmental stressors, smoking, UV exposure and pollution. The key to anti-aging is to stop abnormal activities of MMPs and prevent the excessive production of new MMPs.

Studies contrasting aged and youthful skin
led to the following conclusions:

  • As people age, MMP activity increases while levels of Tissue Inhibitors (TIMPs) esponsible for regulating MMPs decrease.
  • In post-menopausal women, decreased levels of estrogen cause a reduction in concentration of TIMPs and enhanced MMP activity. This results in poor skin integrity and slow healing.
  • Sun damage contributes to MMP-induced degradation of the skin.
